What will you be doing?
As a graduate, your two-year development programme will consist of up to four placement rotations, each lasting around 3-6 months. Our goal is to equip you with the diverse skills and experiences necessary for a successful career as a product manager.
You could work as a Graduate Product Manager in various teams within the T&D department, including Digital, Payments, Transport Services, and potentially other areas such as Data & Analytics. While the first-year placements are agreed upfront, the second year of the programme allows you to tailor your experience based on what you have enjoyed, areas where you wish to gain more expertise and opportunities available.
Here's an idea of what some different placements in different teams could look like over the course of the graduate scheme:
Working in Digital Team
The Digital team is responsible for TfL's customer-facing digital experiences across our websites and apps. In this team, you might help define and prioritise the next set of features for TfL Go, our travel app for Londoners that assists them in planning journeys and checking the TfL network status. For instance, you could conduct research to determine how to enhance features that make it easier for cyclists to navigate London and then collaborate with designers and engineers to bring these enhancements to life in TfL Go.
Working in the Payments Team
T&D Payments manage the payment and ticketing systems at TfL, undertaking a variety of high-profile programmes to improve and expand the TfL payment ticketing system. This placement could position you as one of our Contactless Payment Product Managers. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of projects, including:
- Supporting the design and delivery of propositions to expand Contactless payment across the wider UK transport network.
- Engaging with payment schemes such as Amex, Visa, and Mastercard.
- Identifying ways to make revenue collection more efficient and cost-effective.
Additionally, you'll have the chance to present and chair meetings with the senior leadership team, as well as attend ticketing and future payment networking events.
Working in Transport Services Team
Transport Services are responsible for the services used by our customers and operational staff. In this role, you would work on products that support many of our operational processes, which are crucial for keeping the transport system running and ensuring the safety of our staff and customers. This could involve:
- Digitalising key safety processes.
- Improving systems that manage and maintain our physical assets (e.g., trains and tunnels).
- Developing a new incident management system.
Whatever your aspirations, we'll work with you to align your passions and enthusiasm with opportunities within the Tech & Data department. The Product Management graduate scheme will help you develop a broad foundation of product management skills, which are valuable for a wide range of roles beyond Product Management as well.
Where this career can take you
Upon completion of the Product Management Analyst scheme, you could become a:
• Associate Product Manager
• Product Manager
Over time you could progress to a Senior Product Manager.
The Product Manager graduate scheme will equip you with a broad range of foundational skills, suitable for various roles in technology and business, both within TfL and beyond. For example:
- Communication and influence: Learn how to engage and influence a range of stakeholders to gain their support for decisions.
- Technology fluency: Develop the ability to understand and effectively communicate about technology with everyone from software engineers to business leaders and customers.
- Strategy, vision, and metric setting: Learn how to define a strategy and vision, identify steps to implement it, and measure its success.
- Planning and organisation: Develop the skills to identify solutions to problems and get complex things done.
TfL is a large and diverse organisation, the breadth of the Product Manager Graduate Scheme means there are many opportunities to progress in ten years, both in the wider Tech & Data department or elsewhere within the TfL organisation.
