Leyton station step-free access

Leyton is getting an upgraded Central line station. This will include step-free access, new staircases and a spacious new ticket hall. Work will start in February 2025 and is expected to finish by spring 2027.

The station will remain open, apart from a small number of weekend closures halfway through the work. The contractor for the work will be Taylor Woodrow BAM Nuttall.

What we're doing

We're transforming Leyton station to make it more accessible and encourage sustainable travel in one of London's fastest growing neighbourhoods.

The upgrade will include:

  • A new, larger, high-quality ticket hall building including additional ticket gates to reduce congestion and meet expected future demand
  • 2 new lifts, 2 new staircases and an overbridge to make the station step-free from street to platform for the first time
  • An enhanced station environment, leading to a smoother travel experience for customers, and an improved gateway to Leyton town centre

The work will also focus on sustainability. It will deliver external paving to improve drainage, reuse excavated materials where possible, and use the station's electricity supply instead of more polluting generators.

Funding the work

This work is funded by central Government, the London Borough of Waltham Forest and TfL.

The upgrades at Leyton station contribute to the Mayor's ambitious goal of making 50% of Tube stations step-free by 2030. Today, more than a third of Underground stations across the city have step-free access.
