Works for London is our eight-year programme of highway maintenance activity to make London's roads safer, greener and more efficient.

Our transport network

Most journeys in and around the capital happen on roads, including walking, cycling and bus journeys. Our road network (TLRN) makes up just 5% of London's roads but it carries 30% of traffic, including nearly all of London's commercial road freight.

Our road, tunnel and bus network is the most intensively used transport network in the UK with 3.7 billion road journeys and 2.4 billion bus journeys a year. 

Works for London contract

The Works for London contract is one of Europe's largest highways contracts. To ensure our critical roads continue to become safer, greener and more efficient, we need to carry out day-to-day operations and maintenance using industry-leading teams.

Works for London followed on from the previous LoHAC framework in 2021. The eight-year programme is made up of 3 leading infrastructure companies and TfL. It will maintain our roads, tunnels and assets, such as bus stations, streetlights and trees.

Sustainability is at the centre of this, with electric Works for London vans and cargo added to the fleet used to perform inspections, audits and repairs, and drones used for structural inspections.

Ringway, FM Conway Limited and Tarmac Kier Joint Venture form the Works for London collaboration with TfL, undertaking maintenance, which includes:

  • 347 TfL managed bridges on the road network and/including 123 footbridges 
  • 31,000 lamp columns and 63,000 other forms of lighting 
  • 21,500 bus stops 
  • 420 bus stations and facilities
  • 23,500 trees 
  • 580km of carriageway, including any trial cycle lanes
  • 43km of permanent protected cycle tracks
  • More than 6,000 cycle stands 
  • 630 Legible London walking maps 
  • 9 river piers 
  • Victoria Coach Station 
  • 7 Dial-a-Ride depots

Delivering key objectives

The programme is also delivering schemes to boost walking and cycling, including projects to expand London's growing network of high-quality Cycleways. These projects are vital to allowing more people to choose sustainable and healthier travel, helping to cut congestion, air pollution and road danger across London.

The environment forms an essential element to the contract, with green spaces, tree care, increasing tree planting and more biodiverse verges, trees, and hedges on London's roads.
