The new Silvertown Tunnel under the Thames opened on 7 April 2025, linking Silvertown in east London to the Greenwich Peninsula. The new tunnel will help reduce congestion in and around the Blackwall Tunnel, help make peak time journeys faster and allow for better public transport links between both sides of the river.
You need to pay a charge to drive through Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel unless your vehicle is exempt or has a 100% discount. This charge will help manage traffic levels across both tunnels, repay the build costs and go towards maintenance and operation of both tunnels.
Charges apply for each crossing, in both directions, for both tunnels during charging hours. To help spread traffic levels more evenly and reduce congestion, a peak charge applies during the busiest times (06:00-10:00 northbound and 16:00-19:00 southbound weekdays). An off-peak charge applies at all other times and during weekends 06:00 to 22:00, and is only available to customers registered with Auto Pay. There will be no charge to use the tunnels overnight from 22:00 to 06:00. Use our vehicle checker to see what you will need to pay.
There are charge discounts to support eligible local residents on certain benefits, sole traders, small businesses and charities, and public transport concessions for everyone.
